Tina’s Angels
For quite some time – our group of women friends (quilters and those hoping to learn to quilt) were looking for a project that would allow us to get together regularly and work on some sort of a community service project. A number of ideas were talked about but nothing seemed to get us moving.
One day early this year my daughter and I had lunch with our friend Tina. Tina had been waging a heroic battle against ovarian cancer and lunch with friends was just what she needed. We talked about my daughter’s job. My daughter works as a protective service worker for Children’s Services in Clackamas County. Her job involves removing children from abusive and / or drug affected homes. She had made a couple of quilts to have on hand to give to children in these situations. She mentioned that it would be helpful to have more quilts so that every child in this situation could have one to help bring them comfort in this stressful situation.
Tina got busy – sorting out fabric that she had stashed away in her craft room. On my next trip to her house – she loaded me down with bags and bags of fabric. Take this to the quilt group – and maybe you can turn it into something useful she said.
A couple of weeks later, the quilt group assembled for a day of quilting, companionship and a little good wine. I brought out the loads of fabric that Tina had given me and we went through it. In the bags we found lots of wonderful soft fleece and chenille and other fabrics perfect for children. We got to work cutting and sewing and organizing – what fun we were having. Tina had planned on joining us that day but wasn’t feeling well enough to make it. She realized that she no longer had the energy to sew and she really wanted some good to come from all that fabric sitting in her craft room. As we were working with her fabric that day – we decided we could be her hands and turn all that fabric into quilts for the kids.
That was the day we became Tina’s Angels.
While Tina is no longer with us physically - her spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew her and in these special quilts made for children who truly need the comfort they bring. The quilts made by the group are donated in Tina’s name to Children’s Services of Clackamas County, Oregon. Every quilt carries a label from Tina’s Angels and the hope that it will bring comfort to a child in need.
All the fabric scraps created in the production of the tea cozies and other handcrafted tea accessory designs from OneMark Creations are donated to Tina’s Angels so that quilts will continue to be made for the children impacted by abusive and / or drug affected homes.
